Born in a time of war, Branson had no choice but to join the Berlin Academy of War as all men and women are drafted to learn combat. He excelled with both his polearm scythe and pulse revolver, as well as in medicine-another aspect they were required to learn before making it onto the battlefield.

At nineteen he finally got onto the battlefield. Flying over the battlefield he knew he could overcome the enemy below. But he was not expecting the enemy within. The pilot was a traitor, starting to attack the other planes before finally dive bombing a German platoon. Branson survived, but lost one of his arms in the crash.

He spent a month in hospital, getting a mechanical arm attached to his stump. Here he met Klocia, who had been blinded by the enemies flare gun. They fell in love in the time it took for his arm to take and her optical enhancements to be implanted. She would never really see again, but she could see shadows at least. They were engaged, planning to get married once he was done with his term.

He returned to battle once his arm was working well enough and helped the German empire rise. When he was 21, the German president was gunned down and the Vice President, Klaus Welcker, took over. This man was paranoid and terrible, calling out anyone for treason in his fear.

In this time, Branson was rising in rank, becoming an officer. He was sent to Welcker at the age of 23 to deliver a request for reinforcements as his platoon was suffering  heavy casualties from the Italians. His timing and the flare gun at his side, a trophy from war, made Welcker assume he was a spy and he was arrested.

He was on trial for almost a year before he was sentenced to life in a more primitive time. And so he came to the time of Soul Edge, all of his advances removed, including his mechanical arm. Upon hearing of the power of Soul Edge, he began his journey across the land, searching for a way to return to his own time and the bride that was awaiting him.

The knowledge he had gained in the academy was helpful though, as it made it possible for him to create a new arm. It didn't work as well as his original, but it was enough to wield his Polearm.
